The original property was built in 1914. The Bay Spring area of West Barrington comprises of many such cottages that were built as summer retreats for State House personnel. A later addition to the house doubled the size of the property but functioned autonomously from the original structure.

The task therefore was to create a series of spaces that would connect both halves of the house. The movement of the sun throughout the day inspired us to consider how this exceptional resource might play a crucial role in connecting spaces at different levels.

The remodeling process created a double height wall adjacent to the existing stair, enabling afternoon light to rebound into the living space at ground floor The staircase now serves as the main circulation route to all rooms on the upper floor. The connecting lobby space has been designed to serve as a study space and terminates in a new bathroom area
